Kisii stone is a soft soapstone mined in the mines around Tabaka in the western Kenyan province of Kisii. A number of artists make all kinds of sculptures from it in a variety of colours, shapes and sizes.
The men mine the stone and make the final shape with chisels and files. The women polish all the products by working them with water and sand and make the paintings. Finally, the products are rubbed with oil to make the colour stand out.
